The less expensive to make a TV, the more people to buy them and so on. Food is limited, textbooks only get sold to select people...

But none of those are new ‘facts’. These inflation’s/deflation’s haven’t always been this way.

If only we had a department of health, education and welfare to regulate such things in a reasonable fashion...

Minimum wage has gone up since 1997.

Wild guess, maybe it means that wages have gone up by that much, and the label "more expensive" is for stupid reader's benefit?

Felberin . 2018-03-13 14:13:10
You would think textbooks would be on the blue side, since the printing is cheaper, and I doubt they contain that much new stuff yearly.

That wage data is heavily weighted. Average was 20%, top 1% increased 80 %. https://eml.berkeley.edu/~saez/saez-UStopincomes-2014.pdf

ah but the person who wrote it is probably being paid more, and the publishing house needs to make a profit ;)

Obviously the issue is that they can charge as much as they can get away with, and book being mandatory for edumacation, people have to buy.

But, more importantly, what about the guns?

What really should upset people is just how LOW 55% price increase in 20 years is when compared with a longer timespan.

Now overlay the number of and cost of the admin for each... I think we'll see the reason for the cost increases especially

The top 5 are heavily regulated and government funded or are heavilyvfunded by government loans, bottom line is, these have no free market

And muricans aren't outraged by that?

How do you control mental health?

KartFnocker . 2018-03-13 15:50:49
or maybe it's inelastic demand vs. not. Healthcare and college are essential and seen-as-such, not things you can choose to forgo

Just another proof that you can manipulate statistics any way you want If you know how to interpret data. Prices would have gone up even...

.. without regulation because you don't have a free market situation. That's why they started regulating it. Also some data is probably ...

Government action has driven up college tuition since the 70s. The guaranteeing of student loans/financial aid is at the crux of the issue.

the things on this list are so different it's impossible to blame one factor for the trend (not that we won't try here in comments)

New cars not inflated? How is a car going to cost more than $30K and as soon as you drive away with it the resale is half that price?

really it's a thing that's way too complicated for any one reason, and also for memes and 140 character discussion. Easier to just downvote!
